The region

West Pokot

West Pokot County sits in the north-west of Kenya, in the Rift Valley, bordering Turkana. The ministry’s own material gives the district as roughly 9,135 square kilometres and ranks the county 38th of Kenya’s 47 in poverty, with a transition rate of about 60% from primary to secondary school.

Those figures are the ministry’s, written around 2015, and are reproduced as stated rather than independently checked. More on the Pokot and the county.

Church, school and a single borehole

Nyangaita

YWAM Athi River planted a church here, through the leadership of Joram Kingori, and it still exists amid many challenges.

The ministry’s own account: there is only one school, underdeveloped and lacking teachers, and a population of more than 10,000 people shares one borehole, built by the televangelist T.D. Jakes. It is among the areas worst affected by drought and famine, and among those with no good roads.

Church and a school feeding programme

Kakleshon

A PEFA church was planted here with the help of WMK and Wildfire Ministries USA, to serve the growing population in the area.

WMK runs a school feeding programme with the school here to encourage more children to attend, and plans greenhouses here and at Kamanau.

Kamanau

One of the areas where WMK concentrates its efforts, and one of those worst affected by drought and famine.

Greenhouses are planned here alongside Kakleshon, and a rainwater harvesting system is planned for Kamanau and Nyangaita.

Tailoring school

Sigor

A tailoring school was opened here to train men and women intending to start their own tailoring business, as part of the ministry’s income-generating work.

Also named

The ministry also names Takaywa, Nauyapong, Alale, Ombollion and Kodich among the areas worst affected by drought and famine. Its material describes no programme of its own in those places, so none is claimed here.
