Child safeguarding on this website

Much of WMK’s work is with children. That means this website carries photographs of children, and it should be clear how we handle them.

What this page covers

This page describes how photographs are selected and published on this website. It is a statement about the site, not a description of the ministry’s practice in the field. Questions about how WMK works with children on the ground should go to the ministry directly, using the contact details below.

How photographs are chosen

Every photograph on this site was taken by or shared with the ministry and reviewed one by one before publication. The review applies four rules:

  • No child is named. No caption, alt text, or surrounding copy identifies a child by name.
  • No child’s image is paired with a place name. A photograph showing an identifiable child is never presented alongside the name of a specific school, village, or facility. A name and a face together are far more identifying than either alone.
  • Group and activity photographs are preferred over individual portraits of children.
  • Prominent placements use photographs without children. Page banners and the preview images shown when a link is shared on social media are drawn only from photographs containing no identifiable minors, because those images travel furthest and are the hardest to withdraw.

These rules are enforced in the site’s code, not only by judgement: each photograph carries a safeguarding classification, and the components that render banners and social previews cannot select a photograph containing identifiable children.

What we do not publish

  • Names, ages, or family details of individual children.
  • School names, class details, or addresses shown together with a child’s photograph.
  • Photographs of children in distress, undressed, or receiving medical care.
  • Any image presented in a way that invites pity rather than describing the work.

Captions describe only what is visible

Photograph captions on this site describe what is in the frame and nothing more. They do not attribute outcomes, statistics, or claims about the ministry’s work to an image. Where the site makes a factual claim, that claim comes from the ministry’s own written material, not from a photograph.

Asking for a photograph to be removed

If you appear in a photograph on this site, are the parent or guardian of a child who does, or have any concern about an image here, contact the ministry and the photograph will be removed. You do not need to give a reason, and no explanation will be asked for.

Removal requests are acted on before any question of whether the request was necessary. An image can always be put back; it cannot be un-seen.
