Income-Generating Activities

WMK will offer training in the following key areas: carpentry, bee keeping, farming, metal work, weaving and craft, and electrical. Our mission is to empower the Pokot with knowledge and resources to make them productive and self-dependent. Our future plan is to build a technical school at Lomut that will address all the educational and employment challenges in the vast West Pokot region, and among young people and women. WMK intends to take advantage of the vast resources available in Pokot; this initiative will help in the achievement of some of the MDGs.

WMK also has a big plan of building green houses in many areas, starting with Kakleshon and Kamanau, and also to make available a variety of food crops. We plan to start farming projects in schools, where we will empower primary school children with farming knowledge and skills to help improve the lives of their families. Due to the availability of land and rivers in the area, we hope to educate and train children in different farming techniques. WMK will also plant kales (sukuma wiki), spinach, cabbages, tomatoes, etc., and distribute them to schools and poor families. Each child will also be granted the opportunity to adopt a piece of land, plant a variety of crops, and be able to help feed their families.

To implement the programme, WMK needs: 10 water tanks (at least 5,000 liters); farming equipment; greenhouse materials; seeds for planting (a variety); and trainers to teach the children and adults.

Starting in 2015, WMK began empowerment classes targeting young Pokot men and women who are eager to learn different courses as already mentioned. The classes also focus on teaching a combination of life skills, literacy, and vocational training, giving them various market skills as well as the ability to be independent. A tailoring school was opened at Sigor, to train men and women focused on starting their own tailoring business in future. By providing women with training, we are giving them a way out of the vicious cycle of poverty, hunger, and oppression.
